Making Sense Of TikTok’s Analytics 2

This in-depth guide goes beyond the basics, showing you how to use your data to craft smart content strategies and grow your account.

In one of our previous posts, we talked about the basics of TikTok analytics like how to see the numeric performance of your posts and what all the buttons mean. Now, we're not just looking at the numbers – we're using them as data to find out what to improve on when creating content and what is working in your content methods.

In school, we always had a report card that showed where we did well and where we were not doing well in our academic pursuits. Your TikTok analytics is a report card of some sort. It shows you what did well and what didn't work. At first, checking your analytics may make you feel like you are failing —if the numbers are far below your expectations but this guide is about learning and getting better!

Do you want more views, more likes, and more followers? TikTok already gives you a peek into what your audience loves. It's all in the analytics. Let's see how to use it.

Looking Closer: What the Numbers Mean and What to Do

TikTok's analytics has different sections as we saw in The Introduction To TikTok's Analytics. Let's break down the important parts and what you should do with the data you get.

The Overview Tab:

Video Views: This one's easy – how many times your videos were watched. This shows that your content is being seen by people. If a video suddenly gets a lot more views than usual, then it is probably something that you should repeat, did it have a trending sound? Was the topic hot?

💡 To get more views on your videos:

  • Hook them fast! Use a scroll-stopping hook like a shocking question, an interesting action, a quick action, or a trending sound.
  • Use trending sounds and hashtags to increase the visibility of your content when people search for content similar to yours.
  • Keep it short and sweet. Videos that are 20-35 seconds long tend to do better.
  • Post at optimal times. Later in the followers tab, we will see when your followers are most active, and it will be better to post at those times since they are online then.

Profile Views: This shows how many people visited your main page. A lot of profile views usually means that a video made people curious about you.

💡 To get more profile views:

  • Make sure your profile has a great bio and a clear profile picture.
  • Pin your best and most interesting videos to the top of your profile.
  • Mention your profile in your videos, like saying "check out my other videos for more!"
  • Create a series of videos that encourage people to visit your page to see the next one.

Followers: This shows how many people are hitting that follow button. Keep an eye on when you gain the most followers to see what kind of content is working best.

💡 To get more followers:

  • Analyze your follower growth patterns to see what types of videos led to a spike in follows.
  • Look for a pattern in your trending videos and make more content like them.
  • Engage with the comments on your posts to build loyalty and ultimately a community.
  • Use a clear call-to-action in your videos like "Follow for more!"

The Content Tab

Trending Videos: This shows your videos that have been doing the best lately. By analyzing these videos, you can find the common elements that are resonating with your audience.

💡 To get more trending videos:

  • Click on these videos to really look at them: what's the topic, how long are they, and what kind of music did you use?
  • Analyze what kind of editing was used and what type of text was put on the screen.
  • Try to find what they all have in common, then create more videos like them.
  • Don't be afraid to try new trends but make sure you adapt them to your specific niche.

Average Watch Time: This is how long people watched your video on average. A longer watch time means people were interested and the video kept their attention.

💡 To get a higher average watch time:

  • Use a strong hook in the first few seconds to grab people's attention immediately.
  • Keep the pace of the video quick and engaging so that people don't get bored.
  • Tell a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end to keep people watching.
  • Use captions or on-screen text to keep people engaged even if they have the sound off.

Completion Rate: This shows how many people watched your video all the way to the end. A high completion rate means your content was super engaging from start to finish.

💡 To get a higher completion rate:

  • Create a "surprise" or a "payoff" that only happens at the very end of the video.
  • Make your videos a little shorter to increase the chances of people finishing them.
  • Use an open loop or a cliffhanger to encourage people to watch until the end.
  • Keep the most important information or a satisfying conclusion for the final moments of the video.

Traffic Source Types: This tells you where your views came from, such as the "For You" page, your profile, or a search. This metric helps you understand how the algorithm is sharing your content and how your audience is discovering you.

💡 To get more views from the For You Page:

  • Use trending hashtags and sounds that get your content seen by a wider audience.
  • Keep your videos short and engaging so that the algorithm keeps showing it to new people.
  • Post consistently so that the algorithm sees you are an active creator.
  • Use keywords in your captions that people might search for.

The Followers Tab

Top Territories: This shows you where your followers are from. Knowing where your audience lives can help you understand their culture and what might interest them.

💡 To connect with your audience:

  • Create content that is relevant to different cultures or locations.
  • Post at times that work for those specific time zones.
  • Use music or slang that is popular in those regions.
  • Collaborate with creators who are from the countries where your audience lives.

Followers Activity: This shows you when your followers are most active on TikTok. This helps you know the best times to post for a better chance of your video being seen right away.

💡 To get your videos seen right away:

  • Schedule your posts to go live during peak activity times.
  • Experiment with posting at slightly different times to see what works best for your specific audience.
  • Post consistently to build anticipation with your followers.
  • Interact with your audience in the comments during these peak hours.

Gender: This shows who is watching your videos. This metric helps you know who your audience is so you can tailor your content to their interests.

💡 To tailor your content:

  • Research what topics or formats are popular with your primary gender demographic.
  • Use sounds and trends that resonate with that group.
  • Create content that specifically addresses or speaks to that audience.
  • Analyze your top videos to see if they have a specific appeal to a particular gender.

Turning Numbers into Awesome Videos

Okay, so you've looked at the numbers. Now what? Here's how to use that info to make even better TikToks:

  1. Do What Works Again: Look at your "Trending Videos." What topics, formats, or sounds did really well? Don't just copy them exactly, but think about or use AI ChatGPT to figure out how you can put your own spin on those ideas.
  2. Fix the Flops: Look at videos that didn't do so well. Did they have a low average watch time? Maybe the start wasn't interesting enough. Did people drop off quickly? Maybe the pacing was too slow. Use these clues to make your next videos better.
  3. Post at the Right Time: Check your "Followers Activity." Start posting your videos during those peak hours when your audience is online. More eyes early on can help your video get more traction.
  4. Talk to Your Audience: If you know where your followers are from and their general age, you can make content that's more relatable to them.
  5. Test and Learn: TikTok is always changing. Keep trying new things and watch your analytics to see what happens. The numbers will tell you if your new ideas are working!
