Introduction To TikTok Analytics

TikTok's Analytics shows you what's working, what's not working  with your TikTok account, this helps you make smarter choices about the videos you create.


Whether you are a professional TikTok creator or you are new to TikTok content creation, understanding your analytics will help you know how people respond to your videos and how you can harness their responses to your advantage. Let's dive right in.



Step 1: Getting a Business Account

To see your TikTok analytics, you need either a Business Account or a Creator Account. Both give you access to your audience’s data, but a Business Account is generally better if you're a brand or trying to promote something (like your awesome content that might get a boost from our panel later 😉). Here’s how to make the switch from a personal to a professional account on your phone:

  1. Go to your Profile: Open the TikTok app and tap on the "Profile" icon at the bottom right of your screen.
  2. Open the Menu: Tap the three horizontal lines (the "hamburger menu") in the top right corner.
  3. Go to Settings and Privacy: Select "Settings and privacy" from the menu.
  4. Manage Account: Tap on "Account."
  5. Switch Account Type: You'll see an option that says "Switch to Business Account" or "Switch to Creator Account." Tap on it.
  6. Follow the Steps: TikTok will guide you through a few more steps, like choosing a category that best describes your account. Just follow the instructions on the screen.

Step 2: Finding Your TikTok Analytics


Once you have a Business or Creator Account, finding your analytics is pretty straightforward. Here’s how to do it on both your phone (which most of you in Nigeria and Ghana are probably using!) and on a computer (if you like looking at things on a bigger screen):

On Your Phone (Android):

  • Go to your Profile: Just like before, tap on the "Profile" icon.
  • Open Creator Tools or Business Suite:

- If you have a Creator Account, tap the three lines in the top right and then select "Creator Tools." You should see "Analytics" there.

- If you have a Business Account, tap the three lines and you might see "Business Suite." Tap on that, and then look for "Analytics." If you don't see Business Suite, just look for "Analytics" directly in the menu after tapping the three lines.

  • Tap "Analytics": Once you find it, tap "Analytics," and you're in!

On a Computer (Windows):

  • Go to the TikTok Website: Open your web browser go to tiktok's website and log in to your account.
  • Hover Over Your Profile Picture: In the top right corner of the screen, you'll see your profile picture. Hover your mouse over it.
  • Click "View Analytics": A drop-down menu will appear. 
  • Click on "View Analytics." This will take you to your analytics dashboard on your computer.


Step 3: Exploring the Different Sections of TikTok Analytics

TikTok organizes your analytics into a few key areas to help you understand different aspects of your performance. Here’s a simple breakdown of what you’ll find in each tab:


Overview: This as a quick summary of your account's performance over a chosen period (like the last 7 days or 28 days). You'll usually see things like:

  • Video Views: The total number of times your videos have been watched.
  • Profile Views: How many people have visited your profile page.
  • Followers: A summary of your follower growth.


Content: The Content tab is super useful for understanding what kind of videos your audience loves the most:

  • Trending videos: Your most popular videos over the last week.
  • Individual video analytics: When you click on a specific video, you can see detailed stats like:
    • Average watch time: How long people watched your video on average.
    • Completion rate: The percentage of viewers who watched your video all the way to the end.
    • Traffic source types: Where your views came from (e.g., "For You" page, your profile, following feed).


Followers: The Followers tab helps you understand who you're creating content for and when they're most likely to see it:

  • Top territories: Where your followers are located geographically.
  • Follower activity: The times of day and days of the week when your followers are most active on TikTok.
  • Genders: The gender breakdown of your follower base.


How to Use Your TikTok Analytics: A Step-by-Step Guide


Goal: See how your account performed in the last month.

  1. Access the Overview Tab: Open your TikTok analytics on your phone or computer and navigate to the "Overview" tab.
  2. Set the Time Period: Look for the date range option at the top of the page. Tap on it and select "Last 28 days" to get a full month's worth of data.
  3. Monitor Key Metrics: Now, look at the graphs for Video Views, Profile Views, and Followers to see your total numbers and how they've trended over the last month.


Goal: Identify which day you gained the most followers in the last 7 days.

  1. Go to the Overview Tab: Make sure you are in the "Overview" section of your analytics.
  2. Focus on the Followers Graph: Look at the line graph for "Followers."
  3. Spot the Biggest Jump: Find the steepest upward curve on the graph. This indicates the day you had the biggest spike in followers.
  4. Connect to Your Content: Go to your Content tab and look at the videos you posted on or just before that day. This will tell you what kind of content led to that growth, so you can make more of it!


Goal: See which videos are currently trending and why.

  1. Go to the Content Tab: From your analytics dashboard, select the "Content" tab.
  2. Look at Trending Videos: The top section will show you your "Trending videos." This is a list of your most popular videos from the last 7 days.
  3. Analyze Your Top Performer: Tap on your top trending video. This will take you to a detailed view with a variety of metrics. Look at its Average Watch Time and Completion Rate. If they're high, it means you had a strong hook and an engaging video.
  4. Check Traffic Source Types: Scroll down on the video's detail page to see where your views came from. If a high percentage of views came from the "For You" page, it's a huge win! This means the algorithm is pushing your content to a wide audience.


Goal: Find the best time to post for your specific audience.

  1. Go to the Followers Tab: Select the "Followers" tab in your analytics.
  2. Scroll to Follower Activity: Scroll down until you see the "Follower activity" graph, which shows when your followers are most active. The peaks in the graph show you the most popular hours for your audience.
  3. Set Your Posting Schedule: Plan to post your videos right before or during these peak times. This gives your content the best chance to be seen as soon as it's uploaded, which can lead to more early engagement and a better chance of going viral.


Goal: Learn the demographics of your audience.

  1. Go to the Followers Tab: Navigate to the "Followers" tab.
  2. Scroll to Demographics: Find the sections for "Genders" and "Top Territories."
  3. Tailor Your Content: Use this information to inform your content. For example, if you find that a majority of your audience is from a specific country, you can create videos that are more relevant to their culture or current events.


Goal: See which of your videos has the highest engagement (likes, comments, shares).

  1. Access the Content Tab: Open your TikTok analytics and go to the "Content" tab.
  2. Sort Your Videos: Look for an option to sort your videos. You can usually sort by views, likes, comments, or shares. Choose to sort by "Likes," "Comments," or "Shares" to find your most engaging videos.
  3. Find Your Top Performers: The list will now show your videos ranked by the metric you selected. Tap on the video at the top of the list to see its detailed analytics.
  4. Identify the Winning Formula: Look at what makes this video different. Was it a specific topic, a unique editing style, or a powerful call-to-action that drove the engagement? Whatever it is, take notes and try to use those same ideas in your next videos.


Goal: Find out where in the world most of your followers are from.

  1. Go to the Followers Tab: From your analytics dashboard, navigate to the "Followers" tab.
  2. Find "Top Territories": Scroll down the page until you find the section titled "Top Territories." This will show you a list of countries or regions.
  3. Use the Information: If you find that a large portion of your audience is from a country you weren't expecting, you can use this information to tailor your content. For example, you might create a video that uses a sound or a trend that is popular in that country.


Goal: Check how a recent video is performing in its first 24 hours.

  1. Post Your Video: Upload your video to TikTok.
  2. Go to Analytics: After a few hours, open your analytics and go to the Overview tab.
  3. Set the Date Range: Make sure your date range is set to "Last 7 days" or "Last 28 days" to include your most recent post.
  4. Look for a View Spike: Look at the "Video Views" graph for a significant upward spike around the time you posted. This tells you that your video is starting to get traction.
  5. Go to the Content Tab: Now, switch to the "Content" tab. Your newest video should be at the top.
  6. Check Key Metrics: Tap on your video and quickly check the Average Watch Time and Completion Rate. If these numbers are high, it's a great sign that your video is doing well and could continue to be pushed by the algorithm.
